Only the second time the federal death penalty has been carried out in 17 years.
On Thursday morning the Supreme Court voted to approve the second federal execution of the week, after a span of 17 years since the last death sentences to being carried out. Wesley Purkey was sentenced to death for the kidnapping and murder of Jennifer Long in 1998. Purkey’s last words were “I deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer’s family. I am deeply sorry. I deeply regret the pain I caused to my daughter, who I love so very much. This sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever.”
Perkey was the second federal inmate executed this week as the Justice Department restarted the practice under a directive from President Trump. Justice Department spokesperson Kerri Kupec defended the decision saying, “After many years of litigation following the death of his victims, in which he lived and was afforded every due process of law under our Constitution, Purkey has finally faced justice.”
